On April 9, 2007, BHP Billiton’s proposal to build an enormous liquefied natural gas terminal off the coast of Oxnard and Malibu was scheduled to be heard in Ventura County by the California State Lands Commission.
The multinational corporation’s floating project had the backing of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and all the money and lobbying clout the world’s largest mining corporation could provide. It had been long considered by many to be a done deal.
But this hearing did not end the way backers had anticipated. After more than 2,000 people — supported by the Environmental Defense Center (EDC) and our client and partner organizations — came together for the more than 13 hour hearing, the state agency voted no, setting in motion the final defeat of the once highly-vaunted gas import facility.
