what does this map tell you?

Vickie L. Peters, M.A., is a multimedia journalist who specializes in environmental and conservation issues. She gave VCInFocus permission to use this map.
This map shows the location of all oil and gas wells in and around the County as of March 6, 2013. It includes idle, old and plugged wells. It is important to note wells that are not active because they can be used for storing produced water (brackish brine water that comes up with the oil and gas - can also contain radioactive compounds and methane) and represent a potential source of contamination. Operators must know where these old wells are as they move forward with new projects, and it is important to be aware of the relationship between the oil fields and the water sheds. The Ventura River, Santa Clara River watersheds are shown in the map.
